Consultant psychiatric care for life’s hardest moments
General Psychiatry
Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, trauma — whatever you are facing, you deserve to be assessed by someone with the experience to see the whole picture.
Most people arrive here after a long stretch of something not working. Treatment that helped at first and then stopped. A diagnosis that never quite explained everything. Or a first episode serious enough that waiting months for an appointment is not a reasonable ask.
Plexus offers rapid access to consultant psychiatrists with years of senior NHS experience, for clear diagnosis, honest advice and evidence-based treatment.
Conditions we assess and treat
- Depression and low mood
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar affective disorder
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Stress and burnout
- Insomnia and sleep difficulties
- Adjustment and life-transition difficulties
Not sure whether your difficulties “count”? Please do not screen yourself out. If it is affecting your life, it is worth a conversation.
The assessment
What to expect from your assessment
A confidential conversation with a consultant psychiatrist, and a plan you have agreed to at the end of it.
A full psychiatric assessment
An unhurried conversation covering your current difficulties, your history, your physical health, medications, and what you actually want to change. There is no rush and no judgement.
A diagnostic formulation
Not just a label, but an explanation of how the pieces fit — what is driving what, what came first, and which parts are most treatable.
A written report
A clear account of the assessment and the reasoning, suitable for sharing with your GP or an existing treating team.
A treatment plan
Which may involve medication, a recommendation for a specific psychological therapy, lifestyle changes, or a combination. Where medication is prescribed we set out the monitoring alongside it.
What we offer
Four kinds of consultation
Diagnostic assessment
For people who have never been assessed by a psychiatrist, or whose difficulties have changed enough that the original diagnosis no longer fits.
Second opinions
If you have been in treatment a long time without real progress, a fresh pair of expert eyes can change the picture. Our consultants have experience across inpatient, community, crisis and liaison psychiatry — the breadth needed to reconsider a complex case properly. You get honest, practical recommendations to take back to your existing team.
Medication review
Whether medication is still the right one, at the right dose, and whether it is doing enough to justify its side effects. Sometimes the honest answer is to reduce or stop, and we will say so.
Medico-legal and expert witness reports
Expert psychiatric reports for solicitors, courts and tribunals. With Section 12 approval, Approved Clinician status and experience across general adult, rehabilitation and prison psychiatry, we produce clear, defensible reports.
Why Plexus
What makes this different
Senior clinicians only
Every assessment is carried out by a CCT-holding consultant, most with senior NHS leadership experience across acute, community, crisis, liaison, rehabilitation and forensic settings.
Rapid access
We aim to offer an appointment within approximately one week, rather than the months a secondary-care referral typically involves.*
Evidence-based and honest
We follow NICE guidance and tell you the truth — including when we think medication is not the answer, or that what would help most is something we do not sell.
Continuity
You see the same consultant. Psychiatry delivered by a rotating cast of clinicians is one of the main reasons people stop making progress.
*Subject to availability and return of any pre-appointment information.

Questions
General psychiatry FAQs
No. You can book directly. We do ask your permission to write to your GP, because joined-up care is safer — particularly where medication is involved — but the choice is yours.
Yes. Our consultants are on the GMC Specialist Register and can prescribe and monitor psychiatric medication. Where long-term treatment is settled we can request a shared-care arrangement with your GP so ongoing prescriptions move to the NHS.
Yes, and you do not need your current clinician’s permission. A second opinion is a normal part of medical practice. We will give you an honest view and a written report you can share with your existing team — including saying clearly if we agree with the current plan.
We do not provide therapy ourselves. Our consultants assess, diagnose, prescribe and monitor, and will recommend the specific therapy most likely to help — which is more useful than a general suggestion to find a therapist.
No — Plexus is not a crisis service and cannot respond urgently. If you are at immediate risk, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and select the mental health option, or the Samaritans free on 116 123.
Contact us with an outline of the case, the questions you need addressed and your timescale. We will confirm availability, fee and turnaround before any work begins.
