What to do if your pharmacy cannot fill your ADHD prescription. Last reviewed 11 September 2026.

Where things stand

Supply has improved, but gaps still happen

Between 2023 and 2025 there were national shortages of several ADHD medicines in the UK. Supply has improved considerably since. Even so, a particular brand or strength can still be out of stock at your pharmacy from time to time, sometimes for a few weeks. When that happens, the steps below are the quickest way to get your treatment back on track.

If your pharmacy cannot supply your medication

Three steps, in this order

    Ask your pharmacy first

    Ask whether they can order it in, and how long it will take. ADHD medicines are controlled drugs, so ordering can take a few days. The pharmacist may also know which nearby pharmacies have it in stock.

    Contact whoever prescribes for you

    If Plexus prescribes your medication - usually while your dose is being adjusted - contact us. If you are under shared care and your GP prescribes it, contact your GP practice first; they can ask us for advice if needed.

    Let your prescriber choose any alternative

    Different long-acting versions of the same medicine release it into the body at different rates, so they are not always interchangeable. If your usual product is unavailable, your prescriber will advise on the right alternative and dose.

Worth knowing

  • Ask for your next prescription in good time - at least a week before you run out. Prescriptions for these medicines are only valid for 28 days, so they cannot be issued too far ahead.
  • Do not take more or less than prescribed to make a supply last longer. Speak to your prescriber instead.
  • If you do run out, your usual symptoms are likely to return while you are without it. Take extra care with driving and anything else that needs concentration, and let your prescriber know.
